Study on Vocational Core Competency of Optometrists

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study was aimed at acquiring basic data needed for the vocational core competency education of optometrist by conducting a survey on vocational core competency with optometrist and students.
Methods: A survey on vocational core competency of optometrist was conducted with 128 optometrists and 228 students in the department of ophthalmic optics, and the statistical analysis of the responses were performed.
Results: The necessity of the vocational core competency education was very high in both optometrists (95.3%) and students (89.5%). Communication skills, technical skills, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills were selected as the important basic competence of optometrist, and among them, communication skills was the most important skill. In terms of communication skill, optometrist considered the Language skills is the most important skill, while students selected listening skills as the most important skill. In terms of technical skills, both groups placed the highest importance on the applicable technical skills. For interpersonal skills, optometrist considered the teamwork skills is the most important while the customer service skills was selected as the most important skill by students. In case of problem-solving skills, the importance of the problem -solving capability was shown to be highest in both groups. There was significant differences in the importance of sub-areas of communication skills, numeracy, self-development capability, resource management capability and interpersonal skills depending on the personal information of optometrists and students (p＜.05).
Conclusions: In order to perform the optometrist job smoothly, it is necessary to carry out the vocational core competency education that reflects the importance and needs of optometrists and students, and research and education courses for this purpose are required.
